Maurer Kadarka

Maurer Kadarka

100%  Kadarka.  organic farming; pre-phylloxera vines (100 years+ old) on Danubian green sand soils; horses used to work vineyards, fermented in open vat then aged in big old oak casks for 12 months; bottled unfined, unfiltered with less then 20 ppm sulfites (very low).

This Balkan gem is a lovely skin-contact Kadarka from Serbia.  The Maurer family, originally from Salzburg, is now one of the only natural winemakers in Serbia and has been the godfather of Serbian natural wine movement.  Maurer family has been vine growing here, on the Hungarian border in the region of Subotica / Szabadka, for 4 generations.  And their Kadarka vineyard, planted in 1880, is the oldest in the world — no small feat, given that most producers have given up on this challenging-to-grow grape (tight clusters = susceptible to rot).

Oszkár’s Kadarka is simple and refreshing, with bright acidity and tart fruit to cut through the fat of aperitvo snacks or fall feasts.  It tastes like a brisk fall day – tart pomegranate and blood orange with cloves, and barely-there tannins. Factor in the extremely low ABV (11.4%) and you’ve got the perfect holiday wine – without the post-party hangover.  Serve slightly chilled.

Senor de Lesmos Rioja Reserva Especial

Senor de Lesmos Rioja Reserva Especial

Bodega Casa Juan is located in Rioja Alavesea, the Basque area of Rioja.  The winery is a converted flour mill, featuring concrete tanks for fermenting and blending the wine and barrels for ageing that are used for up to seven years. These are traditional Riojas in winemaking and spirit, though the site-specificity of their Laguardia and Villabuena vineyards confers a fruit character all its own to these wines. The reserva especial is a special blend of 50% Tempranillo and 50% Mazuelo, that is aged in a different selection of barrels than usual. Some more new oak comes into play, but that is only relative to Angel’s very conservative, light toast, high proportion of older barrels aging regimen. This is the rarest and smallest production of the Lesmos wines, and possibly their very best.

Senor de Lesmos Rioja Reserva

Senor de Lesmos Rioja Reserva

All estate fruit, hand harvested, and carefully vinified with native yeasts, this is a hand sewn wine with the purity, texture and elegance to prove it. Produced from 85% Tempranillo and 15% Mazuelo, the Reserva is a barrel selection of wines that Angel feels can undergo longer aging in barrel and then in bottle. Aged a total of 27 months in barrels, then into concrete for more than a year, the Reserva also sees bottle aging until Angel deems it ready for release.

This wine ramps up the intensity of the Crianza, with more pungent fruit as well as a real spicy and wild quality. In a good vintage, this wine is likely to improve for quite a long time.

Matyas Somlyo (Pinot Blanc)

Mátyás Somlyó is a blend of barrel-fermented, orange and other long skin-contact pinot blanc from Slovakia. On the nose, it is dominated by ripe or overripe scents of peach and pear. This character is a result of the oxidative winemaking method. By pouring to glass and getting in touch with air, the fruity character strengthens, then, after a while, the oxidative style is getting dominant, showing typical tones of green walnut.

In the mouth, the mineral saltiness and sourness, coming from the soil, is in perfect harmony with the ripe fruit tones, completed by the light tannins, which makes the overall feel of acidity just about perfect.

Wild yeast fermented. Unfined. Unfiltered.

Pairs well with white meat and pork made with cream or sour cream, also with meals with green herbs, such as thyme, sage or rosemary. Mátyás Somlyó is a great company for aged or smoked cheeses, or aged dried ham.
